48 new EV chargers coming to Sheffield this April

Electric vehicle charger in Sheffield

To support more people to make the switch to cleaner, electric vehicles (EVs), and to help reduce air pollution in Sheffield, the Council, working with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), is installing 48 brand-new electric vehicle chargers to Sheffield.

The new EV chargers are funded through the Government’s Getting Building Fund, secured by SYMCA, and will be operated by Blink Charging. The chargers, which will be made up of 46 fast chargers and two rapid chargers are an important step in helping to expand the existing EV charging infrastructure across Sheffield.

The Council already operates 27 rapid charging points, which fit a range of electric cars, vans and taxis. They are located in council car parks and on-street parking across the city, including four sites within the city centre. The additional chargers will bring the total of Sheffield City Council operated chargers to 75 across Sheffield, with the Council actively looking for further opportunities to expand the network further.

Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair of Transport, Regeneration & Climate Committee, said:

“We’re proud to be supporting local people to make the transition to electric vehicles through our ever-growing EV charging infrastructure.

“We know that many people do not have access to off-street parking, and don’t have the option to charge their car at home. The addition of the new chargers, will bring our total across Sheffield to 75, making it even easier for electric vehicle owners to conveniently access a charging point locally.

“Additional chargers will also reassure those looking to make the switch to a greener, cleaner vehicle - which is one the of best things we can do to reduce harmful pollution from transport, to make the air we all breathe cleaner and improve the health of local people.”

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said:

“Right now, pollution levels are too high in many of our communities; it’s particularly bad for our children’s health and it’s contributing to hundreds of premature deaths across the region.

“To build a healthier and more sustainable South Yorkshire, and hit our Net Zero targets, we need to make it easier for people to choose low emission ways of travelling around.

“That’s why we’re investing in electric buses, like the Sheffield Connect services and building safer routes to walk and wheel around. With more people choosing to buy electric vehicles it’s important that our infrastructure matches our ambitions.”

Alex Calnan, UK Managing Director of Blink Charging, said:

It’s a pleasure to support Sheffield City in deploying its substantial expansion in accessible fast charging, for local residents and visitors alike, as part of the broader SYMCA network. Providing carefully located rapid chargers enables efficient charging options to all drivers, whatever their driving habits. We are inspired by the collaborative approach the combined authorities are taking to implement local provision and clean air solutions across the region.

In addition to the existing EV charging points, those in bold below will be installed in April.
