An inspiring group of Batonbearers are taking part in the Queen’s Baton Relay when it visits Sheffield on Tuesday 12 July, in celebration of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

During its time in Sheffield, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Sheffield Children's Hospital, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park (SOLP) and will join local schools and community groups to experience a range of sporting activities during a sports festival at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS).

Local people are invited to line the route around Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park from 8.30am to watch and cheer as the Baton is carried around the park from 8.45am.

Local schools and invited guests will then enter the English Institute of Sport Sheffield to watch the Batonbearers complete the final leg of the route on the running track before they take part in a sports festival to celebrate the occasion.

Thousands of Batonbearers, each with inspiring backgrounds and stories, will have the honour of carrying the Baton during the journey through England. Batonbearers were nominated in recognition of their contributions to their local community and being an inspiration to others.

The event is being supported by Move More Sheffield Partners including Yorkshire Sport Foundation, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Trust, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and Links Schools Sports Partnership.

Several delegates will be attending from Sheffield City Council including Cllr Denise Fox on behalf of Council Leader Cllr Terry Fox and Cllr Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee. There will also be various people from the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine Board.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re honoured that The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Sheffield so that local people can be a part of this inspiring event.

“Sheffield is well known for hosting events at the highest level, and as the UK looks forward to hosting the games on behalf of the Commonwealth, it’s fitting that we represent the region in the Yorkshire and Humber leg of The Relay. I hope we’ll see lots of people come out to cheer on The Batonbearers, who all have inspiring stories of their own, as they continue the Baton’s journey across the Commonwealth.”

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council said: “This is a fantastic occasion for Sheffield, we’re delighted to welcome The Queen’s Baton Relay to the city. As the route in Sheffield highlights, we’re a sporting city, with some of the best facilities across the country and I know that Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and EIS Sheffield will be the perfect setting for The Relay.

“It will be a brilliant day for our local young people attending the sports festival, who I’m sure will be inspired to watch the games unfold in Birmingham and to have a go at sport themselves.”
