Sheffield’s city centre is undergoing an exciting transformation. With improvements on Fargate nearing completion, the Heart of the City thriving and progress on the new city centre park at Castlegate, there are lots of reasons to celebrate Sheffield.
Cycle hangars to be rolled out across Sheffield, but we need your help
The ability to safely and securely store your bike no matter where you live in Sheffield is set to get even easier with more cycle hangars due to be rolled out in 2025.
Sheffield City Council has ambitious plans to transform the city into a more attractive place to walk, wheel or cycle but in order to take advantage of the new and improved cycle routes, people will need somewhere to store their bike.
Not everybody in Sheffield has the space to store their bike within their own home, shed or garage and that is where residential cycle parking comes in. The on-street cycle hangars take up less space than a single car space but open up to reveal space for up to six bikes. Hangars are closed and securely locked, keeping bikes safe, secure and away from the elements.
Currently, there are 7 cycle hangars located across Crookes and Walkley with another due to be installed soon. The Council has ambitions to add an extra 14 hangars across the city in the spring, paid for by funding generated from the Clean Air Zone.
And this is where we need the people of Sheffield to help us.
Spaces in a Cycle Hangar are available on a first come, first served basis part of a subscription service at £72 per year and you can request a hangar in your neighbourhood online now: haveyoursay.sheffield.gov.uk/residentialcycleparking
Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:
“Sheffield is changing, it’s transforming and as part of that transformation we want to give people more choice in how they get around. However, the issue of cycle storage is a very real one, some residents simply don’t have the space at home. The fantastic thing about the cycle hangars is that they are a wonderful place to store your bike, safely and securely, close to your house.
“The hangars we have already installed are proving very popular and so, as a result, we are rolling out 14 more but this time across the city. If you think you need a hangar on your street, get in touch with us and tell us where you want it and why you want it. We’ll review all the suggestions early in 2025 and announce the new locations for the latest round of cycle hangars shortly afterwards.”
