Waste and recycling collections over Christmas and New Year

In the areas affected, information tags were attached to bins last week to explain the changes.

Veolia and Sheffield City Council are encouraging residents to make sure they have noted any changes to prevent missing a bin collection during the busy festive season.

All collections will return to normal from Monday 7th January.

Festive Recycling tips

Over the festive period it is likely that you will produce lots of extra waste, including wrapping paper, Christmas cards, boxes, catalogues, glass and plastic bottles, biscuit/chocolate tins and lots more.

The good news is that you can enjoy a ‘green’ Christmas using the recycling services provided.

Your Blue Bin:
Use your Blue Bin for your paper and card, including Christmas cards, wrapping paper, boxes and catalogues.

  • Flatten your card to make more space in your bin

  • Remove ribbons and bows before recycling

  • Try to remove as much sticky tape as you can from your wrapping paper

Your Brown Bin:
Use your brown bin for all of your glass bottles and jars, tins and cans, including your
biscuit/chocolate tins.

  • Squash your cans and plastic bottles to make more space in your bin

  • Remember that when it comes to plastic, only plastic bottles, can go in your brown bin

  • Other plastic products, including carrier bags, pots, tubs and trays, can be recycled at
    your local recycling site

  • Tops and trigger sprays can also go in your brown bin

Extra waste and recycling

  • You can place small amounts of extra paper and card, no bigger than your blue bin, next to your blue bin for collection.

  • You can take extra recycling including paper, card, glass, cans and plastics to your local
    recycling site.

  • During the festive period, we will take small amounts of extra black bin waste as long as it is bagged and placed next to the black bin on collection day.

  • Extra waste can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Find your nearest site.

  • If you are lucky enough to receive a large present such as a new television, washing
machine, sofa or any big item, you can arrange a bulky waste collection from your home.

  • We can collect up to 12 items, and prices start at £21.90 for up to 3 items.

Christmas trees

  • Recycle your real Christmas tree by taking it to your local Household Waste Recycling

  • Or you can arrange a collection from your home using our bulky waste recycling service.

  • Sign up for waste and recycling service alerts and updates, including any changes to your waste and recycling services due to snow and ice.
