Have your say about recycling services

Councils across England are developing plans to make recycling simpler and easier for residents and to help the planet.

In Sheffield, a ‘Simpler Recycling’ consultation on future waste and recycling services is live for residents to have their say.

From 31st March 2026, plastic pots, tubs, trays, cartons, aluminium foil, and aerosols will be recycled, with plastic films to follow by 31st March 2027.

These materials are not currently recycled from homes in Sheffield, and to meet reforms set out in The Environment Act 2021, ‘Simpler Recycling’ will be introduced to make England’s recycling simpler and consistent.  The consultation also considers options for providing more paper and card collection capacity.

The consultation covers two sets of questions around current and future waste and recycling: one aimed at residents in houses, the second aimed at residents in flats.

The questions focus on:

  • how full residents’ blue and brown bins usually are on their day of collection
  • how important it is to residents to recycle plastic tubs, pots and trays, aluminium foil, aerosols, cartons, plastic bags and wrapping
  • options around bin sizes
  • frequency of bin collections
  • factors that are important to residents when considering changes in waste and recycling services

The outcome of the consultation will be used alongside the results of commercial discussions with Veolia and the independent modelling carried out by the Waste and Resources Action Programme to inform a report to be brought to a future Waste and Street Scene committee. This report will set out recommendations for future waste and recycling services.

Councillor Joe Otten, Chair of Waste and Street Scene Committee, at Sheffield City Council, said: “We really want to hear what people have to say as this consultation affects everyone. It is important we deliver recycling services for our city that people feel they need and that we do everything we can to encourage people to recycle more and help better our planet for current and future generations.

“I encourage as many people as possible to complete the public consultation so that we can make the right decisions about Sheffield’s recycling services. The consultation closes on Sunday 20th October 2024, so make sure you have your say before then.”

Paper copies are available for anyone who can’t complete the consultation online, by emailing wastemanagement@sheffield.gov.uk or by calling 0114 2037621.
