Respect staff at Household Waste Recycling Centres

We are incredibly proud that we’ve been able to keep our five Household Waste Recycling Centres open across Sheffield during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The hard work and commitment from our workface during this difficult time has enabled us to do this.

Unfortunately, despite working tirelessly to ensure that residents are kept safe when using the sites, there have been a number of incidents this week, where people visiting the sites have threatened and verbally assaulted staff members.

Sheffield City Council and Veolia will not tolerate any physical or verbal threats to its workforce, and all such incidents will be reported to the Police. It may result in sites being closed.

We are unable to accommodate as many visits as usual because we have to limit the number of people at each site to ensure safe social distancing.  Whilst we understand that this may cause some frustration, putting these measures in place ensures the safety of the public and our workforce.

The sites can only remain open if residents fully co-operate and use the sites safely and responsibly. It is critical that the following instructions are adhered to:

  • Always listen and be courteous to our staff
  • Only visit a HWRC to dispose of waste that cannot be safely stored at home and which may cause an accessibility, fire or safety issue or which may attract vermin
  • Do not queue outside the sites as this may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass, and you will be asked to move on.
  • Only one person should visit a site, and you should only bring waste that you can safely carry as no assistance can be provided by site staff.

We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company.

Residents can arrange for collections to take place from their home for both garden waste and bulky waste.

Whilst sites are currently open, the safety of the public and staff is paramount, and if large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines, they will be forced to close.
