For International Women’s Day 2024, we’re highlighting some of the organisations in Sheffield that provide help and support to women.

We spoke to Janet Goodinson, Head of Operations at Sheffield Women’s Aid (SWA), about the support they provide to women and children who experience domestic abuse.

What does Sheffield Women’s Aid do to support people in Sheffield?

We provide supported accommodation for women and children who are experiencing domestic abuse and need a place of safety. We offer two large refuges with self-contained accommodation. The refuges provide a calm, supportive, and therapeutic space and an immediate place of safety and support for women and their children to feel physically and emotionally safe.

We offer a safe and empathetic space, where those needing our services can access dedicated, person-centred support to help them plan and move on towards a safer future free from the impact of domestic abuse.

Why Sheffield for your organisation?

Sheffield Women’s Aid was established in Sheffield in 1974 and has been providing refuge and safe accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic abuse since that time.

Do you have any advice for people who are experiencing domestic abuse?
