Sheffield is all set for its biggest WEURO2022 celebration yet, as the city prepares to welcome England’s Lionesses for the tournament’s first Semi-Final fixture, at Bramall Lane on Tuesday 26 July.

  • Fan Party to open at earlier time of 12pm
  • Activities extended to Peace Gardens
  • Large screen on Devonshire Green will show live BBC broadcast of the Semi-Final at 8pm

After topping Group A and winning a tense quarter-final clash against Spain, the Lionesses will play in Sheffield, against Sweden, to a sold-out stadium of more than 30,000 people.

Pre-match build-up will include Sheffield’s most exciting Fan Party yet – extended from Devonshire Green to include the Peace Gardens to allow more people to get involved, and starting at the earlier time of 12pm.

A large screen will also be showing the live BBC broadcast of the game at 8pm on Devonshire Green so that the city can come together to watch the action.

The WEURO2022 cultural programme will also be brought to life during the Fan Party with UK Centre for Carnival Arts bringing football inspired costumes parading the city centre, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra putting on pop-up performances of the WEURO2022 anthem.

Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council said:

“We could not be prouder or more honoured than to host this semi-final fixture with our Lionesses taking centre stage. We’ve followed their journey with hope, and dare I say it, confidence that we would be cheering them on at Bramall Lane to a packed-out stadium and sending them on to the final.

“We want to give our England squad the warmest, most supportive Sheffield welcome, and want everyone to get involved so that you can all look back and always remember your part in this very special moment.

“The semi-final Fan Party is going to be our biggest WEURO party yet and I can’t wait to see all the fans and local people celebrating together once again.”

Following three amazing group fixtures, Sheffield has set two new records for attendance at a Women’s EURO group stage fixture not involving a host nation, with thousands of international fans from the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland being united with local people through their love for the women’s game.

The city has been transformed into a festival of football with fans bringing smiles, colour, dancing and excitement to the city, which local people have embraced.

Now Sheffielders and England fans from across the country will have the chance to share in the Fan Party experience like never before in Women’s football – building up the excitement before the Lionesses take pride of place on the pitch at Bramall Lane - the world’s oldest major stadium still hosting professional association football matches.

Cllr Grocutt added: “Sheffield is a football city – the Home of Football – which we’ve seen reflected in the record-breaking attendance figures at our group stage fixtures and the way our local people have embraced this tournament and all the visiting fans.

“More importantly though, throughout we’ve talked about legacy, and this is what it comes down to – so many of our young girls and women watching and cheering for their favourite players right before their eyes, showing them that their dreams are possible – it’s truly inspiring.”
