Statement: Libraries plan for reopening
At the beginning of July we announced that library staff are working as quickly as possible so that libraries can re-open safely.
An ‘Order and Collect’ service will be available from some of our libraries soon and this week we are carrying out and agreeing risk assessments and making sure that signage for safe staff working is in place. We will then be able to access buildings to do staff inductions before we start the ‘Order and Collect’ services from the week beginning August 10th. We will confirm which libraries and dates when this service will be available from as soon as possible.
We will then progress to offer Order and Collect to as many libraries as possible across the city before opening for book browsing and computer access which will be the next phase of reopening libraries.
Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “Every library building is different and they all have to be assessed so that we know they are as safe as possible. This is an important part of reopening, with safety being our priority, and will mean services will be available at some libraries before others.
“We can’t wait until we have reopened all of our libraries to everyone. It’s been a very difficult time for so many people and the reassurance and welcome that a library brings is something we want to see re-established as soon as possible. We just need to make sure that all is in place for your safety.”
