Streets Ahead nominated for national award

 

Sheffield City Council’s highway maintenance contractor Streets Ahead has been shortlisted for team or crew of the Year in this year’s Keep Britain Tidy’s annual awards.

Beating off stiff competition from local authorities across the country, Streets Ahead has been named as one of the finalists who is making significant improvements to the environment on people’s doorsteps.

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:

“I would like to congratulate Streets Ahead on being shortlisted for one of our annual awards.

“We know that people want to live in places that are clean and tidy and local authorities have a massive role to play in this.

“We are delighted that so many authorities entered our awards and the standard was incredibly high. We look forward to seeing Sheffield City Council at our awards ceremony in Birmingham in February.”

Routine street cleaning is undertaken by Amey on a continuous basis to help keep the city as litter- free as possible.

Amey also work proactively with local schools to deliver their Education Programme, which includes litter awareness.

“I am very happy to see our Street Cleaning team recognised in this way.  They work incredibly hard all year round in all weathers. It can be a thankless task, but here we have national recognition that their work is of the highest standard and I am very proud of everything that they do for the people of Sheffield.

“I would also like to thank all the voluntary groups who work with us day in and day out, keeping their neighbourhoods clean and green, and Sheffield schools who have engaged with our anti-litter messages over the past year. Their involvement is a credit to the city.”

Combatting litter remains a top priority for the council and since January 2019, the council has issued more than 1500 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN’s) to tackle the minority of people who continue to drop litter.

Earlier this year, the cleanliness of the city’s roads was acknowledged by central government, with Sheffield City Council receiving praise for maintaining a consistently high standard of roadside cleanliness.

The Keep Britain Tidy Awards will be presented at the charity’s annual Network Conference in Birmingham on Thursday, February 6th, 2020.
