The future of city centre public spaces and transport

Sheffield’s city centre is undergoing an exciting transformation. With improvements on Fargate nearing completion, the Heart of the City thriving and progress on the new city centre park at Castlegate, there are lots of reasons to celebrate Sheffield.

Our ambitions don’t stop there. Sheffield City Council has a plan to create nearly 20,000 new homes in the coming years, which will bring new residents, new services and new opportunities. We need a transport network that will support those ambitions.

We’re developing a City Centre Access and Movement Plan, which will form the next phase of the evolution of our city centre, guiding what our future streets will look and feel like, following on from the Connecting Sheffield: City Centre project, which will start construction in early 2025, involving transforming Surrey Street, Pinstone Street and Charles Street into prosperous, people friendly streets.

We need your help to develop that plan.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

“Sheffield is changing, it’s transforming into a fantastic place for people to live, work and enjoy, but our streets need to be prosperous, people friendly spaces, to match our ambitious plans that we’ve got for the city.

“However, we want to hear from the people of Sheffield how you get around, how you use the current transport system and how we can improve things for the good of the city. Sheffield is a fantastic place; we have a lot to shout about and to be proud of, the City Centre Access and Movement Plan will allow people to add transport to the long list of highlights in Sheffield.”

We’re starting an initial conversation with people in Sheffield to understand how you get into the city centre, and how you move around it. And ultimately, how you want our spaces and streets in the city centre to feel while you travel. We want our streets and transport network to be safer, accessible and inclusive, so that everyone can access everything the city centre has to offer.

Whether you live, work or study in Sheffield, or you visit our city centre, we want to hear from you. We’re also keen to hear from our businesses, that are the lifeblood of our city centre.
