The North Together - northern leaders join forces for levelling up

Today (Thursday 14 October) civic and business leaders across the North will put forward a collective partnership offer to Government for how the North can lead the UK’s fourth industrial revolution, manage the transition to a Net Zero economy and deliver on the promise of
levelling up.

Five gamechangers have been identified, which – delivered collaboratively across the North and with Government – will build an inclusive, productive and sustainable economy that works for all of our people and the country.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:

“Sheffield stands united with the North. Together we can and will lead the way in growing an inclusive, productive, and sustainable economy for our people and businesses, supporting our vision for Sheffield, the North, and the whole nation.

“The North already generates half of the country's renewable energy and we have the strength, skills, innovation, technology, people, and passion to drive a sustainable industrial revolution, leading the UK's transition to NetZero - the essential target we have committed to in Sheffield.

“Sheffield is a city of makers and inventors, with a proud history of industrial innovation. Home to some of the world’s leading manufacturers we remain at the forefront of technological advancement and research, and are well placed to strengthen economic opportunities for the North.

“Together, the North has huge potential but we need to work as one and with Government to level-up the North by investing in Net Zero and better transport connectivity, tackling inequalities in life expectancy and education and skills, and driving innovation and productivity with increased investment in research and development.

“I’m proud to join our northern leaders, we are working collaboratively to provide the best possible combined offer to work with the Government. The Government has to recognise this and deliver the levelling up that is crucial to our success and the resilience and future of our country.”
