Useful information for the Christmas period

Between Christmas and New Year the Council only runs essential services. See below for information about the festive period.

Community helpline

During the holiday period, the Community Support Helpline will provide support on its open days for emergencies only (such as food shortages).

  • Monday 25 December: Closed
  • Tuesday 26 December: Closed
  • Wednesday 27 December: Open (8:30am to 5:30pm)
  • Thursday 28 December: Open (8:30am to 5:30pm)
  • Friday 29 December: Open (8:30am to 5:30pm)
  • Monday 1 January: Closed

Emergency and out of hours

Call 0114 273 4567 over Christmas and New Year for help and support for:

  • Repairs and lift emergencies
  • Children’s safeguarding (Emergency Duty Team number: 0114 2734855. Between Wed 27 and Fri 29 the Safeguarding Hub and Children’s Social Care will operating as normal)
  • Adult social care
  • Homeless service

Bin collections

Residents whose bins are usually collected on Monday or Tuesday will need to note changes to their bin collections. There will be no collections taking place on 25, 26 December 2023 and 1 January 2024.

Monday Collections: 

  • Collection due on Monday 25 December will take place on Saturday 23 December
  • Collection due on Monday 1 January will take place on Saturday 30 December

Tuesday Collections: 

  • Collection due on Tuesday 26 December will take place on Sunday 24 December

Bins must be put out for collection before 7am on your collection day, and the bin lid must be closed to ensure collection.  

All other bin collections will take place as normal.  Further details on what can be placed in your bins over the festive period and Household Waste Recycling Centre opening times can be viewed on the Council website: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/christmas-opening-times-2023

Howden House

Howden House will be closed to the public on 22nd December 2023 and will reopen 2nd January 2024.

Roads and pavements

Amey’s Operational Control Room remains open 24 hours a day all year round. It is still possible to report a problem as normal during the Christmas period.
